My ‘Just in time’ Premier League Preview

The 2025 Premier League campaign is soon upon us, and this season has the potential to be one of the best yet. Read on to find out my personal thoughts regarding the upcoming season.

Competitive Title Race

In the last five years, the title has been dominated by Manchester City and most recently Liverpool being crowned champions in the 24/25 campaign, so it’s with pleasure to state that maybe this year will be different.

Arsenal have been runners up in the last three years, with Mikel Arteta’s side consistently drawing the short straw in the crucial moments. However, they have addressed the large problem upfront with the marquee acquisition of Viktor Gyokeres, a serial goalscorer.

Alongside City, Arsenal and Liverpool, a potential candidate in the title race are World Champions, Chelsea. Their large financial backing in the window has allowed Maresca to significantly strengthen in multiple areas. The signings of Liam Delap, Joao Pedro, Jamie Gittens and youngster, Estevao places the Blues in the position of potential challengers for the season ahead.

With a potential four horse race, all teams spending in the window, it appears that the Premier League will not be dominated by the same two clubs, causing for an interesting battle at the summit.

Down The Bottom

Similarly to the title race, the relegation battle has been predictable. Promoted teams often go straight back down to the Championship, however this year may surprise a few.

Leeds, Sunderland and Burnley have all made efforts to strengthen their squad. Incomings such as Granit Xhaka for Sunderland and Kyle Walker for Burnley, provide much needed Premier League experience to the club and added quality to survive the season. However, it remains to be seen whether this will be enough for the promoted clubs to avoid relegation.

It’s hard for Wolves fans to not worry about the season ahead. Minimal activity in the market and the loss of crucial players like Matheus Cunha and Rayan Ait Nouri, leaves Wolves in a vulnerable position. In the last two seasons, Wolves have found themselves in the relegation zone at Christmas, an indication to their early struggles.Maybe this year they won’t be so lucky to escape the drop.

Another side that I believe may struggle is Brentford. Thomas Frank joining Spurs, Mbeumo to Manchester United and the almost certain exit of Yoane Wissa leaves gaping holes across the club. Wissa and Mbeumo contributed to a total of 50 G/A out of Brentford‘s 66 in the league last season, can they survive without their star men and an inexperienced manager at the helm? I’m not so sure.

Fight for Europe

The battle for European places is wide open this year.

Manchester United, massive underachievers last season have to prove doubters wrong. It’s almost unthinkable for a club the size of United to not be in Europe this season, they have to be in the next. Ruben Amorim has had a full preseason with his squad, bolstered by Matheus Cunha, Benjamin Sesko and Brian Mbeumo: it would be embarrassing if they are not at least in contention.

Newcastle United have had a turbulent transfer window (for the wrong reasons.) Alexander Isak forcing a move away from St James Park has been the dominating headline, yet his future is still in limbo. Losing out on Benjamin Sesko to rivals Manchester United was also a huge disappointment, however they are starting to get names through the door. Anthony Elanga joined from Nottingham Forest, Jacob Ramsey joins from Villa, Malick Thiaw from AC Milan and Yoane Wissa looks certain to be the next in black and white. They should still have the quality to challenge for Europe by the end of the campaign, but will lack of depth affect them with a congested fixture list?

Aston Villa secured European football like Newcastle last season, and they’ll have expectations to do it again. Fending away suitors for Ollie Watkins and Emi Martinez will be crucial for Unai Emery to repeat his successes of last season, however he has lost Marcus Rashford and Marco Asensio, with the club not moving to sign the pair on a permanent deal. Evann Guessand joins from Nice to bolster the front line in what fans hope to be another successful season for the Midlands outfit.
